The island's moana, ngahere and rangi are protected by several layers, and one of them is our Dark Sky Sanctuary status. To become and remain a Dark Sky Sanctuary, the darkness of our sky is measured on an annual basis, and reported back to the International Dark Sky Assocation. Islanders also commit to using the correct light fittings to keep light levels low. This means that we can all enjoy the most beautiful sky in this stunning island environment.
