More about the book

'Sanctuary' is a stunning coffee table book that tells the story of how Aotea Great Barrier Island was 'discovered' by Auckland Astronomers and became an International Dark Sky Sanctuary.

This coffee table book commemorates the accreditation of Aotea/Great Barrier Island as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary by IDA. It describes the island, including its history, flora and fauna, geography and geology and the unique off-the-grid life on an offshore island. It also contains a captivating description of the scientific measurement of its darkness. The subsequent implications of the accreditation, such as the need for lighting controls and the potential for astro tourism are also discussed.

Beautiful images

The book is brought to life by numerous photographs, including some stunning (astro)photographs by Mark Russell and Shaun Lee. It comes complete with a map of the measured dark sky locations, and is a perfect companion for astrotourists to the island and anyone interested in this island of New Zealand’s Hauraki Gulf. Also nice as a gift or souvenir for those that stayed at home.

This book is brought to you in a cooperation with Destination Great Barrier Island, a not for profit trust that promotes a sustainable visitor industry on the island. Proceeds of its sale will go to this cause.
